1896 Philadelphia Morgan Silver Dollar

The 1896 Philadelphia (no mint mark) is one of the "workhorse" dates of the late 19th century. With a robust mintage of 9,976,000, it stands as the third-highest production of the 1890s for the Philadelphia Mint. While millions were melted under the Pittman Act of 1918, huge quantities were preserved in Treasury vaults and released during the massive silver dollar disbursements of the 1950s and early 60s.

Because of this high survival rate, the 1896-P is often the "entry-point" coin for new collectors. It is known for generally having a sharp strike and attractive luster. In the current market, it is a very affordable date in circulated condition, though the massive spike in silver prices over the last year has created a high value floor for even the most common examples.
