1889-O Morgan Silver Dollar New Orleans Mint
This 1889-O Morgan Silver Dollar is a quintessential relic of the Gilded Age, struck at the historic New Orleans Mint. This particular year saw a robust mintage of 11,875,000 units; however, the 1889-O is notoriously recognized by numismatists for being a "condition rarity." While common in circulated grades, uncirculated specimens are surprisingly scarce because a massive portion of the original mintage was held in government vaults and later melted under the Pittman Act of 1918. Furthermore, the New Orleans Mint was often plagued by "weak strikes" during this era, resulting in soft details on the eagle’s breast feathers and Liberty’s hair. Finding an 1889-O with a strong strike and original luster is a challenge for high-end collectors. This coin features George T. Morgan’s iconic design of Lady Liberty and the heraldic eagle.
